Students in grades K-5 are making observations of earth-based observations of experiments which will be flown on the NASA Microgravity Aircraft during the week of Feb. 6-10, 2012 by three of their teachers.

Connecticut Kids Turn Massive NASA Telescope Toward Distant Black Hole!

On Dec. 14^th E. Hartford-Glastonbury Elementary Magnet School (EHGEMS) students took over the controls of a massive NASA telescope dish located in California’s Mojave Desert—part of NASA’s Deep Space Network Goldstone Complex– from a computer in their school science lab.

Scientists in California handed over mission control of the 34-meter (110 foot) dish, nine-story tall, 850,000 pound NASA Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) to allow eager students the opportunity to collect and record new information from a distant Black Hole.

At the request of NASA/JPL scientists the EHGEMS student team is measuring the variability of radio emission powered by enormous black holes in distant quasars. The young astronomers learn antenna operations and basic principles of radio astronomy. During their time on the telescope they calibrate the antenna, direct it to specific targets in distant galaxies, they collect the data and share it with NASA astronomers.

Scientists at the Jet propulsion Laboratory (JPL) ultimately validate and incorporate the data into their research. Through this process, students learn that they can make valuable contributions to the world of science.

The GAVRT project offers EHGEMS children the unique experience to use the telescope to seek new knowledge and share scientific discovery with the world.

They join other scientists and explorers who have gazed into the night sky since the beginning of time in an attempt to understand their place in the universe.

EHGEMS One of 12 Schools Selected for National NASA Astronomy Opportunity!

NASA Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope ( GAVRT) student team is now training to operate the NASA 34 Meter/850,000 pound radio telescope in California. They will collect data from a Black Hole using this huge telescope. The students will operate the telescope in California from a computer located in the EHGEMS Science Lab!

EHGEMS Scientists Begin Second Microgravity/Earth-based Testing Experiment

Fifth graders at EHGEMS recently started their second experiment to test Newtons Laws in microgravity!

Trout in the Classroom Volunteers Deliver Brown Trout eggs to Life Science Lab!

Second graders are treated to a big surprise during a lesson in the life science lab when our wonderful volunteers from the Trout in the Classroom program arrived with 100 eggs!

During the next several months our EHGEMS fourth graders will be responsible for the life needs of these growing Brown Trout. They will be in charge of keeping the trout tank ecosystem clean, the water chemistry balanced and temperature cold, around 50 degrees.

Thank you to our wonderful teachers and friends at the Recycle Museum!

Third grade scientists visited the Recycle Museum to find out where materials go after they place them into a recycle bin, what we should recycle and why this is so important to the earth!

Scientists of the Week!

One of our EHGEMS Scientists of the Week shown above was inspired to work on her own science experiments after reading a very cool science experiment book she read as part of the NASA Microgravity Project. Congratulations to Kassidy and the many other student “Scientists of the Week” who continue independently investigating amazing science topics!

Students Help NASA with Names for the Two Moon Satellites!

Name the Moon Satellites!

First grade engineers build models of the two new GRAIL satellites which launched from Kennedy Space Center in September and are now headed to the moon. In a few more weeks the satellites will orbit around the moon and send back new information about the moon’s gravitational fields, the inner core and the crust. Go NASA!

Now students will submit ideas they have for ‘cool” names for the twin satellites!

Click to view slideshow.First grade scientists explored the amazing animals that live in the world of the earth’s oceans!

At Mystic Aquarium Students felt, first-hand, the slimey coating of a Ray and the bumpy skin of a starfish. They saw powerful Beluga Whales and sea lions gliding swiftly under the water, playful penquins divng and popping to the surface and delicate, lacey jelly fish moving gracefully!

Thank you to the twenty adult chaperones who worked with small groups of children!

Click to view slideshow.Science comes alive at EHGEMS as student scientists in grades kindergarten through grade five explore the outdoors as field scientists studying marine biology, ecologists, botanists ans chemists. Students use the tools scientists need to study questions in these areas as they work with classmates and independently to make observations. Older students share what they learn with younger students!
